Brendan Harley, Robert W. Schaefer Professor of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering (RBTE Theme Leader/EIRH) has been elected to the Board of Directors of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). Harley will begin his role as Director At-Large following the AIMBE annual event on March 31, 2025.  

The AIMBE Board of Directors drives the organization’s advancement of medical and biological engineering through advocacy, policy engagement and professional development.

Harley researches biomaterials that replicate the dynamic, spatially patterned and heterogeneous microenvironment found in the tissues and organs of our body. This approach generates new insight regarding how biomaterial cues can instruct cell responses in the context of development, disease and regeneration. Harley earned his bachelor’s degree from Harvard in 2000, followed by a master’s and a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2002 and 2006, respectively. He completed postdoctoral studies at the Joint Program in Transfusion Medicine a Boston Children’s Hospital before joining the department in 2008.
