The IGB’s Art of Science program is a celebration of the common ground between science and art. Images from Illinois research were the starting point for these works, which were created by researchers working in partnership with IGB artist Julia Pollack. These pieces are the result of conversations between the scientists and the artist.

The title of this year’s show, “Aerenchyma,” refers to the spongy air-filled cavities that run up and down within a plant, connecting the underground body to the air above. During drought conditions, the aerenchyma degrades, and the plant must redistribute its power to maintain resilient growth patterns. This biological structure, fragmented or whole, allows the plant to breathe. As science asks questions to understand our world, we may experience split structures. But might we also consider growth and collective survival in a changing world as our shared dream?
