Guide to IGB Building and Lab Access

Welcome to the IGB!  Here is the process for acquiring access to the IGB buildings, labs, and research space for new hires, researchers, faculty, and staff. If you need Core Microscopy Suite only, please visit the Core Facilities page.

You may have toured the facility with your supervisor or sponsor and are ready to start your new position as a student, faculty member, researcher, or staff member.  

Here are a few things you need to know and have ready before you begin the IGB Connect Access Request and approval process.

  • Supervisor Name or Faculty Sponsor
  • The Research Theme you will be working in or the Admin Space
  • Your UIN and NetID (If new to the university, you will receive your UIN and Net ID on your first day from the IGB HR Department). Then you can complete the IGB Connect Form. 

What to expect after you submit the online IGB Connect Form

There will be two approval processes.

  1. The first approval will route the form to the appropriate approver based on your theme or supervisor, who will review and return it to you if more information is needed or approve the request. You will receive a welcome email from IGB Connect with details on required training and setting up an IGB system services account.  The IGB system service account will allow you access to the IGB file server and any machines in the building you may be using.
  2. When you upload your training certificate(s) to Connect,  the second approval will route to the appropriate approver, who will review the training certificates and, when approved, will ask facilities to grant you the applicable IGB access necessary for your role

IGB use of card readers.

We use card readers for building entry as well an many locations throughout the facility.  The reader will use your i-Card for access. It is essential you have an updated i-Card.  On the backside corner of your card, you should see © HID Seos PxIf missing or different, please check with the I-Card Center if you need an updated card.

    Closed on designated holidays, reduced service days, and whenever the Illini Union Bookstore is closed.

Safety Training

Online safety training is required for your role at IGB as a researcher, student, and support staff.  
Your i-Card/prox card will be activated after you have completed the IGB Connect entry form and uploaded all mandatory training documentation.

Mandatory Online Safety Training Based on Your Role at IGB

Researchers Working in IGB Labs
Researchers Using BSL-2 Cell Culture

Safe Handling of Human Cell Lines/Materials in a Research Laboratory is required annually to work in a BSL-2 lab. 3500 is a BSL-2 lab, and BSL-2 training is required. If working in 1200 IGB, please check with your theme lab manager to see if BSL-2 training is required. The first time training is done in person through a Live Training provided by DRS. Follow the link below.

There are two options: “Register for Live Training” (for first time users), and “Take Online Training” (for annual renewal. After selecting “Register for Live Training”, select a session and “Enroll.” Then select the appropriate PI registered as BSL-2.  Once this training is complete, the certificate of completion can be found under your training certifications on the DRS website. Please email this certificate to both IGB Facilities (facilities@igb.illinois.edu) and respective lab manager.

IGB support staff safety training (computer work only)

IGB support staff safety training. Information includes severe weather-related emergencies, fire alarm system, areas of rescue assistance, and building evacuation plans, and required for all IGB support staff.

Users of the Core Facilities ONLY who are not working in the IGB Labs

Faculty are not required to take online safety training, but strongly encouraged to review minimally the training slides for researchers, which includes building safety information and IGB-specific requirements. DRS Online General Laboratory Safety Training provides general lab safety information and campus safety policies and procedures.
